Lately, as the temperatures drop and the holidays creep closer, my body has been sending me different signals — and maybe yours is too. I’m craving warm, cozy meals instead of the lighter foods that felt good just a month ago. It’s amazing how the body knows exactly what it needs to stay balanced this time of year.
For me, that means bringing more winter squashes into our meals — Kabocha, Butternut, Pumpkin, Delicata, and Spaghetti squash. I honestly can’t pick a favorite because I love them all. My daughter picked up the most beautiful butternut squash at the farmers’ market today… absolutely delicious. These colorful winter varieties feel hearty, satisfying, and so nourishing — they’ve been showing up on our plates almost nightly. ’Tis the season!
WBB Nutrition Spotlight
Winter squashes are true seasonal superfoods. They’re packed with fiber, which not only supports digestion but also feeds the healthy bacteria in your gut — a big part of immune health and hormone balance. Their deep orange color is your hint that they’re rich in beta-carotene (vitamin A), which supports vision, skin, and cellular repair while also helping to lower inflammation. (I do love a multitasking vegetable!)
Some of my favorites — Kabocha, Butternut, Acorn, and Delicata — are also full of essential minerals like potassium and magnesium. These help regulate blood pressure, muscle function, and even your stress response.
I also love that the natural complex carbohydrates in squash provide steady, lasting energy. No highs and crashes — just a gentle, grounded fuel that keeps you going.
And from a mind-body perspective, squash is naturally grounding. These heartier winter vegetables help stabilize energy, especially when cooler weather (and the holidays!) can leave us feeling scattered and depleted. Warm, cooked squash dishes have a way of making you feel calm, nourished, and centered — exactly what our bodies crave right now.
To inspire your fall table, I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite ways to enjoy winter squash — each one comforting and so delicious in its own way.
On the menu this week:
🥣 Butternut Squash Soup — creamy, classic, and simple comfort
🥗 Roasted Squash Sheet Pan Trio — a nourishing simple one-pan meal
🍛 Kabocha Squash & Chickpea Curry — gently spiced, full of flavor, and grounding
Your body has its own wisdom — especially this time of year. Keep listening, keep nourishing, and give yourself what you truly need.
Gratefully yours,
Lisa
